Descendants Of The Sun Was Such A Disappointment: Here's Why
Well, I was truly disappointed after watching Descendants Of The Sun (DOTS), and with good reason.
This is one of the first of the first impressions I made when I started watching the eternal love story, Descendants Of The Sun. Now don't get me wrong, I have seen quite a lot of shows by the writer, Kim Eun-sook, who has written shows such as Secret Garden, The Heirs, Guardian: The Lonely and Great God, and The Glory to name a few. Although I find a common trend in her works, the one that disappointed me the most is Descendants Of The Sun, especially since it had the perfect cast!
Although I am not discouraging you from watching this show as it DOES have some great moments that are truly heartwarming, I was struggling to find a story. that's because it doesn't have one! Now, Wikipedia has used about 700 words to write the summary of DOTS. I asked Chat Gpt to summarise this text within 100 words. This is the result I got:
"Captain Yoo Si-jin and Master Sergeant Seo Dae-young of the South Korean Army meet Dr. Kang Mo-yeon after apprehending a thief. Si-jin and Mo-yeon start dating but face challenges due to Si-jin's military duty. Their philosophical differences lead to a breakup. Mo-yeon is later assigned to Uruk, where Si-jin is deployed. They reunite, facing an earthquake, an M3 virus outbreak, and a warlord. The couple officially starts dating, but Si-jin and Dae-young go missing on a classified mission, presumed dead. Months later, Si-jin surprises Mo-yeon in Albania, revealing their rescue by a North Korean soldier. The group is happily reunited."

Now don't get me wrong, not everything is bad. This show has some of the best acting and directing you would expect from a classic Korean show. The Song-Song couple steals your heart with their romantic moments. Jin Goo as the master Sergeant and Kim Ji-won as an army doctor deliver believable performances as the second lead couple.
If only there was a more concrete storyline, I would be singing praises all the way. These are some of the observations I made about the show:
- They could have gone with an actual war-torn country to relate with the audiences; all it needed was nuanced writing.
- Over-romanticizing of soldiers, army doctors, and civilians struck by war in a fictitious country seemed like a disconnect from reality.
- The relationship between Si-jin and Mo-yeon had scope for improvement. All they do is break up and make up for really silly reasons.
- Song Hye-kyo’s character is fickle and at times shallow, which adds no depth to the storyline.
- On the other hand, Song Joong-ki’s character is suave and charming but struggles to hold his ladylove’s affection.
